Regardless of the vindictiveness of the religious right ("wrong" is a better word), our young gay people are being bullied both by their peers and adults who are influenced by the hate preached at them weekly. A human being, especially a child, can take only so much rejection before he or she considers suicide to end that pain. If there is strong family support the child may make it into adulthood. In "The Door to Neapolitan Dreams," Bradley Brennan had a slightly older sister, Natalie, who tried to look out for her brother. But we learn that psychological damage was done during Bradley's early years and it brought on his multiple personality disorder or DID, Dissociative Identity Disorder, as it is now called.

"The Door to Neapolitan Dreams" is about a mature Bradley Brennan with all of his ghosts. It is finally with the help of Dr. Keith Parker, a psychiatrist, that he slowly emerges from his disorder and is able to lead a nearly normal life.

This was a difficult read for me. Although I didn't have the childhood problems of Bradley, I coped as best I could during my childhood in the 1940s and 1950s. I realized I liked boys better than girls at the young age of 9. There was no support group then, and each of us who were gay were made to believe that we were an anomaly, or as the religious wrong of today call it, an abomination.

Although I almost didn't read Dan Spahr's book, I'm glad that I did. It was most disturbing to realize the damage being done to children by non-caring adults who allow the practice of incest and rape with their innocent children. We see the results in the news daily now as another child takes a gun and goes to a school and kills randomly to get even with the world that has abused and bullied him.
